In line with the National Maritime Week Celebration 2015,
Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) and Maritime Industry
Authority (MARINA) hosted the Women in Maritime Asia Regional Conference:
Promoting Women’s Advocacy for Domestic Ferry Safety held in Pasay City on
September 21-25, 2015.
DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya opened the event and said
that the session is a response to International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s
conference on enhancement of safety of ships carrying passengers on
non-international voyages. He also cited that women working and establishing a
network of chapters are effective ways to instil the importance of safety
domestic voyages. He said, ““We should enlist the collective support, views,
and input of a very important segment of the population–indeed, constituting
more or less 50 percent. The view of women will be particularly useful in such
an issue that has the potential to elicit substantial controversy numerous
maritime countries.”
The DOTC Secretary also announced and offered Manila as the
official home of Women in Maritime Associations (WIMA) Asia Secretariat.
