IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping held its 2nd session last February 2-6 and discussed matters concerning the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers. The session was attended by representatives from 79 member governments, 3 associate members of the IMO, 3 Inter-Governmental Organizations, 29 Non-Governmental Organizations and 1 IMO Training Institute. 

A total of five teams were formed and discussed matters which include training materials for model courses and polar codes, the Manila amendments, passenger ship safety and Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS); human element issues such as guidelines for port state controls (PSCOs) on the ISM Code, carriage of dangerous goods in packaged form by sea, and guidelines for PSCOs on seafarers’ rest hours.

The third session on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping is tentatively scheduled to take place on Feb 1-5, 2016.
