ILO 185 expert meeting to advice on the implementation of the Seafarers’ Identity Documents Convention

International Labour Organization (ILO) has organized an international tripartite meeting of maritime and technical experts on border control to advice on the national implementation of the Seafarers’ Identity Documents Convention from February 4 to 6, 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

In 2003, governments and shipowners’ and seafarers’ representatives adopted the Convention No. 185 at the ILO in order to reflect security protection requirements and concerns as well as the identity document which includes biometric information. The highlight of the meeting is the implementation of the Seafarers’ Identity Documents or “SIDs” Convention as the industry recognized the need of requirement for the admission of seafarers to foreign countries that is secured, authenticated and will protect the rights of seafarers. The meeting will also discuss on how to implement the convention in a simpler and less expensive way so that all countries including those with limited resources can participate. The ILO 185 expert meeting will also deliberate the experiences, cooperation and networking among international and national experts.
