Magsaysay Institute of Shipping Celebrates 20th Anniversary

On March 23, the Magsaysay Institute of Shipping (MIS) celebrated its 20th Anniversary in conjunction with the commencement exercises of 133 cadets and over 400 alumni who listened to inspirational messages from Atty. Nic Conti of the Maritime Industry Authority and Senator Loren Legarda as special guests of honor.
The Magsaysay Institute of Shipping was founded in 1992 by Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, its sister company Fairmont Shipping based in Hong Kong, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) one of the largest shipping companies in the world, to develop young men and women to be excellent seafarers and officers with the skills, global standards and values demanded by an increasingly demanding maritime industry.
Since its establishment, MIS has trained over 4,800 cadets and seafarers for a fulfilling career at Magsaysay, Fairmont and MOL.  In 2011, MIS entered into partnership with select, reputable maritime colleges under the Academe Industry Linkage Program, where the third year of maritime education is taught at MIS.
Situated in a over 4  hectares live-in campus in Dasmarinas, Cavite, MIS is equipped with the most advanced facilities and technology and a curriculum that  ensures a holistic approach to education by balancing technical knowledge and skills training with an emphasis on leadership and value formation.
Doris Magsaysay-Ho, Magsaysay's CEO said, “MIS was founded with a vision to establish a training institute that would develop future officers and provide world class training for our seafarers.  Today, we are truly proud that this vision has become a reality with many of our graduates holding key management positions onboard.”
“We are rapidly expanding our fleet and aim to recruit, train, and hire more Filipinos who currently represent 70% of our sea-going workforce.  MIS has played a key role in producing highly-skilled and competent seafarers for our vessels", said Mr. Mr. Akimitsu Ashida, Chairman of Mitsui OSK Lines.
Senator Legarda, who sponsored and ushered the Senate’s concurrence in the ratification of the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) 2006, also known as the “Seafarers’ Bill of Rights”, thanked MOL for providing training and jobs to Filipino seafarers.  In her speech, she also said, “The sea could be one of the most dangerous and harshest environments for workers, which is why we have worked hard to ensure fair working conditions and security of tenure for our seafarers through the MLC.  We take pride in our seafarers’ competence, dedication, hard work and contribution to the nation and there’s no better way to give back to them than by ensuring that the protection of our Filipino seafarers’ interest is imbued with national interest.”
The MIS Alumni Association also elected its officers while their family members attended a health awareness seminar. Alumni who have achieved positions as Master, Chief Engineer, Chief Mate and First Engineer positions were also given awards for their achievement.
Also participating in the graduation and anniversary ceremony were Mr. Paul Lazaro, SVP of the Development Bank of the Philippines, Congressman Elpidio Barzaga, Jr., Representative District of Dasmarinas, PRC examiners, partner schools and international media.
