New guidelines for the implementation of OSH to protect seafarers

Maritime occupational safety and health
(OSH) experts have arranged new guidelines to assist governments in the
implementation of the health and safety protection and accident prevention set
forth in the MLC 2006 Regulation 4.3.
The new OSH guidelines addressed the following
maritime working environment:
- Demanding
physical working conditions
- Potentially
hazardous task
- Isolation
- Long
hours of work
- Rigid
organizational structures
- High
levels of stress and fatigue
The experts established the
responsibilities of governments, shipowners as well as seafarers to improve
compliance with the MLC 2006:
- Accident
and illness prevention practices and implementation
- OSH
training
- Emergency
and accident response
