IMB warns shipping industry on cyber-attacks threat

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) released a warning for the shipping industry about the increasing threat of cyber-attacks. The shipping industry was perceived by IMB as the “next playground for hackers”. IMB has also advised that systems dealing with shipping of goods must be enhanced and strengthened.

IMB revealed that hackers will target areas in carriers, ports, terminals and other transport operators. In its statement, the Bureau also mentioned a case as discussed by TT Club’s Mike Yarwood where the “criminals” will target the crew’s personal devices to gather confidential information such as passwords, release codes and other data in order to track delivery instructions specifically containers with illegal drugs.

The Bureau also cited that the shipping industry must execute standards and regulations that system security must be managed by industrial control systems or maritime control systems to ensure safety and security against cyber risks.
