MARINA: Upgrade maritime education to meet growing demand for Filipino seafarers

Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Administrator Dr. Maximo Mejia said that the demand for Filipino seafarers will grow by 1% annually until 2016 and MARINA’s doing its role to ensure that Philippines is ready to supply quality and competent seafarers by upgrading the country’s maritime education system including training and certification. And with excellent maritime education, Filipino will remain as the seafarers of choice.

MARINA strengthens its role in the implementation and enforcement of International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for seafarers. MARINA has already suspended some maritime schools with low passing rates in the maritime officers’ board exams.  According to Mejia, with the approval of Republic Act 10635, MARINA will be in authority to administer the board exams for maritime officers in 2015.
