2015 World Maritime Day Theme: Maritime Education and Training

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted “Maritime Education and Training “as the theme for 2015 World Maritime Day celebration. IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu said that it is timely to focus the attention on the effective training and education of seafarers in order to maintain a safe and secure shipping industry. He further explained that the industry needs to preserve the quality, practical skills and competence of qualified human resources, in order to ensure its sustainability. He also disclosed that the Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP) together with the World Maritime University (WMU) and IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) are at the forefront of the IMO's capacity-building strategy to ensure that more maritime personnel understand and implement the IMO standards effectively.
