MLC Amendments: Financial Security System to Protect Seafarers

Amendments to the MLC 2006 to protect abandoned seafarers and in cases of workplace death or long-term disability of seafarers have been approved by the delegates to the International Labour Conference (ILC). MLC amendments require the provision of financial security system for a greater protection to crew. The system will cover claims for abandonment as well as death or long-term disability of seafarers due to occupational injury and hazard.

The support to these amendments is aimed to help improve the working and living conditions of seafarers.  The MLC amendments are scheduled to enter force in early 2017. Certificates or other documents will need to be posted on board ships and be available to all crew members. The certificate must establish that financial security is in place to protect the seafarers.
