Fairmont Holds 16th Officers and Crew Conference

Fairmont Shipping, in cooperation with Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, held its 16th Officers and Crew Conference last April 11-12, 2019 at the Magsaysay Institute of Shipping in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, Philippines. The conference gathered 87 officers and crew members for 2 days of seminars and workshops including a teambuilding activity and the annual Service Awards Night.

Fairmont Shipping (Canada) Ltd. Senior Vice President Charles Leung welcomed the participants and cited that the company will continue to organize conferences so that officers, crew members and invited guests and speakers can sit down and talk, exchange opinions, and to learn more and build relationships.

With the theme “Shipboard Accident Prevention and Health Awareness”, the conference aimed for officers and crew members to be aware and knowledgeable on how to work safely and be healthy on board. Topics discussed include promotion of health and wellness, port state control issues, accident prevention and safety operations onboard, among others.

On the evening of April 11, the Service Awards Night was held to recognize the great service of the 31 officers and crew members who have served Fairmont for 10, 15, 20, and 25 years. The awards were presented by Fairmont’s Sadanori Ibuka, Capt. Xuiyi Song, Capt. Sharookh Raghina, Matthew McAfee, Charles Leung, and MAGSAYSAY’s Arnold Javier, Marlon Roño, and Doris Magsaysay Ho.

The 2-day event also included a conference for the wives and families. Facilitated by the Sailors’ Society Philippines, Inc., Chaplain Nicodemus Tuban talked about the mental health awareness which is currently a global issue. The participants engaged in group discussions and activities designed at building strong family connection and understanding the predicaments of seafarers and families. Since wives were often left alone while seafarer husbands are working onboard, the Fairmont Wives Club was formed to provide the needed support of friends who would understand their unique situation. The Wives Club also actively participates in the programs and initiatives of Fairmont and MAGSAYSAY.
