Viking Sun Makes Maiden Call in the City of Manila

Manila had the opportunity of welcoming Viking Sun during her maiden call at Pier 15, South Harbor last March 4, 2018. Operated by Viking Cruises, this was the cruise ship’s first call to the Philippines.

As Viking Cruises' way of showing appreciation for the invaluable contribution of its Filipino crew members representing 29% of the total crew of Viking Sun, 284 family members were given the opportunity to visit onboard and tour the facilities of Viking Sun. Vacationing crew members and their families were also treated for a welcome gathering held at the Rizal Park Hotel.

Together with the Magsaysay Group executives, the maiden call was graced by His Excellency Sung Kim, United States Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines and key officials from the United States Embassy, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Associated Marine Officers' and Seamen's Union of the Philippines, and Physicians' Diagnostic Services Center.

The maiden call served as a promotion of job opportunities for aspiring Filipino service and technical personnel who would like to pursue a career onboard cruise ships. In 2014, Viking Cruises partnered with Magsaysay Maritime Corporation to recruit Filipino seafarers to occupy positions in the hotel department of its vessels. Impressed by Filipino seafarers’ competence and professionalism, Viking Cruises has more than 500 Filipino crew members onboard.
