Magsaysay Learning Resources, Inc. (MLRI) and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS), the only internationally recognized professional association in commercial maritime, representing shipbrokers, ship managers and agents all over the world, officially launched its partnership last August 22, 2016, at Robert Hall, Ermita, Manila, Philippines.

ICS was represented by Julie Lithgow, Director; Yiu-Kei Chan, Chairman of ICS Hong Kong; and Leif Ollivierre, Senior Lecturer, while MLRI was represented by Alexander E. Querol, President; and Chief Engineer Romeo S. Piccio, Head of Operations. Captain Alfredo V. Vidal, Deputy Administrator for Operations of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), was the event’s Guest of Honor and he presented MARINA’s agenda that focuses on the advancement of the Philippine maritime sector and how it can further enhance its capability to compete regionally and globally. “This partnership comes at an opportune time as the country aims to position itself as a global shipping hub. Good technical people need an understanding and expertise of the commercial shipping business so they can excel at what they do,” said Captain Vidal.

Following the half-day launching program, a short course entitled, “Commercial World Explained,” was introduced and given to attending participants including ship owners, managers, directors, and senior executives of shipping companies as well as representatives of government agencies.

With this new partnership, MLRI and ICS hope to strengthen the network of shipping professionals by promoting competence in and understanding of the global shipping business.
