Magsaysay Institute of Shipping Holds 5th Graduation Ceremony for Academe-Industry Linkage Program

Magsaysay Institute of Shipping (MIS) conducted the graduation ceremony for the fifth batch of cadets under the Academe-Industry Linkage Program (AILP) last March 8, 2016 at the MIS Campus in Dasmarinas, Cavite, Philippines. 

The Class of 2016 had a total of 85 graduates—42 were conferred with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and 43 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering. D/C Jude Carlo L. Ellorde received the Award of Excellence, while 10 other cadets were given special awards namely, D/C Eugene D. Panelo, D/C Jude Carlo L. Ellorde, D/C Ryan Cristian L. Laurete for Best in Deck; E/C Gerry B. Weragoda Arachchi, E/C Albert D. Dischoso, E/C Jhundel R. Ropa for Best in Engine; D/C Christian R. Mueca for Servienda; E/C Joshua L. Reyes, E/C Beal E. Rosales for Leadership; and E/C Raffy A. Despuig for Best in Math. 

This year’s commencement speaker was Atty. Julito D. Vitriolo, Executive Director of the Commission on Higher Education. Marlon R. Roño, Chief Operating Officer of MIS, started the program with his welcome address. Other distinguished speakers included Koichi Muto, Chairman of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL); Doris Magsaysay Ho, President and CEO of A. Magsaysay, Inc.; Eduardo U. Manese, Chairman of A. Magsaysay, Inc.; Capt. Masaaki Nemoto, Senior Managing Executive Officer of MOL; and Paul Lazaro, Finance Vice President of the Development Bank of the Philippines. 

Since its implementation in 2011, 450 cadets have completed AILP. The linkage program is the first of its kind in the country where cadets from eight partner maritime schools continue their third year education at MIS for degrees in Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering. The program guarantees employment upon graduation where cadets are given onboard assignments in the founding partners’ and their principals’ vessels.
