MANILA, Philippines – To meet the increasing demand for competent, skilled and dedicated seafarers, Magsaysay Institute of Shipping’s (MIS) founding companies—Magsaysay Maritime Corporation (MMC) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL)—decided to expand MIS through the establishment of the MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA). Set to start operations in June of 2018, MMMA is envisioned to be the leading private maritime higher educational institution in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific region and will offer degree programs in Merchant Marine and other allied courses.

The groundbreaking ceremony for MMMA was held last March 8, 2016 in Trinidad Avenue, Barangay Salitran IV, Dasmariñas City, Cavite, about 5 kilometers away from the MIS campus. The event was attended by representatives from the founding companies and the local government. Marlon R. Roño, President of MMC and Chief Operating Officer of MIS opened the ceremony, and was followed by messages from Koichi Muto, Chairman of MOL; Doris Magsaysay Ho, President and CEO of A. Magsaysay, Inc.; Eduardo U. Manese, Chairman of A. Magsaysay, Inc.; and Honorable Congressman Elpidio Barzaga, Jr., Representative of Dasmariñas City, Cavite. Captain Masaaki Nemoto, Senior Managing Executive Officer of MOL, led the ceremonial toast.

Since its inception, MIS has been providing training and scholarships to select qualified cadets from all over the Philippines. By establishing an academy with state-of the-art facilities, sound curriculum, and well-trained and proficient faculty, the founding companies hope to strengthen the Filipino seafarers’ position as the number one choice in the global maritime workforce.
