Filipino Seafarers' Protection Act awaits President Aquino's signature

The Filipino Seafarers' Protection Act which seeks to protect seafarers’ labor claims is awaiting for the signature of President Benigno Aquino III. The bill was approved by the House of Representatives approved last December and by the Senate on September 21.

The bill will protect the seafarers from dishonest practices of lawyers and other individuals who have been taking advantage of labor claims and disputes filed by the seafarers by asking for unconscionable legal fees ranging from 30 to 60 percent of the benefits claimed. The proposed law will impose a cap on the total fees that lawyers may collect and the amount will not exceed 10 percent of the benefit awarded to the seafarer.
