World Maritime Day 2015: Addressing the Image of Shipping to Recruit Seafarers

On September 24, International Maritime Organization (IMO) held a symposium on maritime education and training as part of this year’s World Maritime Day event.  The symposium offered a platform to discuss the demand and need of the shipping industry of young people and the importance of addressing and raising the image of the shipping industry to attract young people into the maritime professions. These include easy access to the internet onboard ships and make the conditions of seafarers onboard more appealing.

Speakers addressed three sessions: opportunities for the young generation in the maritime industry; seafaring as a profession; and developing seafarer skills through quality maritime education and training as this will secure the shipping industry including the creation of training berths and the requirement for quality assessment of training courses.
